Many of our customers are fond of our organic nettle leaf, but some folks may not realize that we also offer organic nettle seed! We go out into the field (wearing gloves and long sleeves of, course!) and strip the seeds directly from the stalks when they are still in their optimal green state. They are unripe and still in the calyx (the base of the flower) when we harvest them. We harvest the seed at a stage that is intended for ingestion, not planting. In other words, it will not germinate.

Nettle seeds are sometimes considered adaptogenic – they support the body’s resiliency in the face of stressors. They are particularly nourishing to the adrenal glands. These seeds are stimulating and mood-elevating. In fact, drinking a strong nettle seed tea is said to make it difficult for sensitive individuals to sleep if drunk too late in the day! The kidneys also benefit immensely from the trophorestorative properties of this herb.

There are many ways to consume nettle seeds, but one of our current favorites is to eat them! Incorporating medicinal foods into daily life can also be delicious! We love pairing them with traditional culinary herbs which are high in antioxidants and have various other amazing medicinal benefits. We adapted this recipe from the traditional gomasio recipe. You can sprinkle our “nettle gomasio” onto eggs, pasta, meat, or roasted vegetables. The possibilities are endless! It is easy to make, delicious, and can be modified with different culinary and medicinal herbs for any type of cuisine.
Nettle Seed Sprinkle
- ¼ cup nettle seed
- 1 tsp sea salt
- 2 TB nettle leaf
- 1 TB rosemary
- 1 TB basil
- 1 TB oregano
Put all ingredients into a mortar and pestle. Gently grind them into a sprinkle-able powder. Pour your sprinkle into an empty spice bottle so it’s easy to shake onto your food. You could also keep it in a jar, and pinch it generously onto your meals. Enjoy the deliciousness and daily health benefits. Your body will thank you!
